Fence Regulations
Sandy Springs
Permit Requirements
Fence and Wall Permit Application required. Must submit site plan to scale, fence detail/elevations. Owner affidavit required.
Height - Front Yard
4 ft max for solid/opaque fences. May exceed 4 ft with spaced picket design (2" min gap, 2:1 picket-to-opening ratio for vertical, 1:1 for horizontal).
Height - Side/Rear
8 ft max for solid/opaque fences
Height Notes
Height measured from finished grade to highest point between columns/posts. Columns and ornaments may exceed max height by up to 3 ft.
Pool Fences
Corner Lots
Must not impair driver vision or constitute safety hazard
Materials Allowed
Wood, brick, stacked stone, stucco, ornamental metal, or other durable material approved by Director. Chain-link allowed only in side/rear yards (not parallel to street) and must be vinyl-coated.
Materials Prohibited
Vinyl (except replacement in kind of existing). Barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire prohibited.
Historic Districts
N/A - refer to specific overlay districts if applicable
Setbacks
Fence footings must be entirely within property, cannot encroach onto property line
Design Requirements
Finished side must face street and adjoining properties. Street-facing fences 6+ ft require 3 ft landscape strip. Street-facing fences need masonry piers (12" min width) every 24 ft and at direction changes. Street-facing walls need architectural variations every 24 ft.
Gates
Must open inwardly (toward property). Min 30 ft from edge of pavement. May be up to 3 ft taller than attached fence. Stand-alone gates need masonry piers on both sides. Public/private streets cannot be gated.
Retaining Walls
See Sec. 9.4.3. Walls 6+ ft require PE design and certification.
Floodplain Rules
Fences prohibited in regulatory floodway. May be permitted in Future Conditions Floodway if: sufficient open area certified by PE, posts anchored (PE certified), no-rise certification approved. See Sec. 9.5.3.E.
Color Restrictions
Only black, white, or earth tones permitted. Primary and neon colors prohibited.
