Type I Certificates of Appropriateness, for ordinary repairs and maintenance, are not required in this district.

That limit applies instead of the yard height limits inside those 20 ft. Walls: 6 ft max where permitted, and no walls in the front yard. The district rules set a fence height only for the front yard. They set no side or rear yard fence height, so the citywide zoning limits govern there. Fence height is measured from the finished ground level, or from the top of a retaining wall, to the highest point of the fence. Where a retaining wall rises above the grade it holds back, that extra wall height counts toward the height allowed for a fence on top of it. In R-1 to R-5, a fence up to 4 ft in the front yard, or up to 6 ft in a side or rear yard, is allowed on top of one permitted retaining wall. The district rules sit on top of the property's existing zoning. Where they and another city rule differ, the more restrictive one governs.

Corner Lots

Within 20 ft of a street intersection: 2.5 ft max for any fence or wall in a dwelling district, measured from the grade at the intersecting street right-of-way lines. That limit overrides the yard height limits inside 20 ft. Visibility triangle: in districts where yards are generally required next to streets, nothing may block the view between 2.5 ft and 8 ft above the grade of the adjoining sidewalk or right-of-way inside the triangle formed by the first 20 ft along each right-of-way edge at an intersection. The same applies where a driveway meets a street, measured along the driving surfaces.

Front yard: wood picket, brick, stone or iron type construction. Atlanta counts a barrier that is at least 50 percent open as a fence. One that is 50 percent or more closed is a wall, and walls are not allowed in the front yard. Side and rear yards: the district rules set no fence material rule.

Where the chapter does not specifically address the work, the Urban Design Commission applies its general preservation criteria, which require changes to be compatible with the property's historic character, materials and features. Accessory structures must sit to the side or rear of the main structure, inside the buildable area, and must not project beyond the front of the house. They must go in the least visible spot, and screening with plants or fence materials may be required if they are visible from the public right-of-way.
