Permit Requirements
Zoning compliance certificate required for ALL walls and fences located in a front yard prior to construction. Scaled drawing must be submitted to Planning & Zoning.
Height - Front Yard
4 ft max solid; above 4 ft requires min 50% visibility uniformly spaced over entire linear footage
Height - Side/Rear
Not specifically limited in front yard ordinance (Sec. 110-81 applies to front yard). Side/rear governed by general zoning district standards.
Height Notes
Posts, columns, light fixtures, ornamental statues not included in 4 ft measurement. Vehicular entry structure exempt from 4 ft and 50% visibility within 35 ft of driveway. Grade changes require stair-step adjustments.
Corner Lots
On arterial/collector street: exempt from 4 ft max height and 50% visibility requirement for noise reduction. Exception does NOT apply to the street the front door faces.
Materials Allowed
≤4 ft: brick/brick veneer, stucco, synthetic stucco, rock, stone, cast-stone, wood, wrought iron, chainlink. >4 ft: same materials EXCEPT chainlink not permitted above 4 ft.
Materials Prohibited
Barbed wire and electric fences prohibited (except for horse properties and farming in A-R district)

Setbacks
No fence in public right-of-way. Min 3 ft from fire hydrants. Driveway clearance: min 14 ft wide x 14 ft high for emergency vehicles.
Design Requirements
Front yard fences >4 ft must have 50% visibility uniformly spaced. Must submit scaled drawing with elevations, location, height, materials, grade changes.
