Permit Requirements

Materials Allowed
Brick, stone, wood, wrought iron in front yards. Historic areas may have additional restrictions on materials.
Materials Prohibited
Chain link/wire prohibited in front yards. Exposed concrete block, tires, junk, pallets, railroad ties, vinyl prohibited (per DeKalb pattern).
Historic Districts
City has Historic Preservation Commission. Properties in historic district require Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) for fence installation. Materials and design must be compatible with historic character.
Setbacks
Fences cannot be in public right-of-way
Design Requirements
Front yard materials restricted. Historic areas require compatibility with neighborhood character. COA review applies.
Gates
Front yard gates: max 6 ft, set back min 15 ft from ROW (per DeKalb pattern)
Retaining Walls
Max 6 ft; may be tiered with engineering approval
