Permit Requirements

CRITICAL: Fences cannot obstruct drainage ways, swales, ditches, or depression areas (Sec. 20-401). Height measured from finished grade.

Corner Lots
Corner side yard: 4 ft max (per DeKalb County pattern)
Materials Allowed
Brick, stone, wood, wrought iron in front yards. Historic district: materials must be compatible with neighborhood character.
Materials Prohibited
Chain link/wire prohibited in front yards. Exposed concrete block, tires, junk, pallets, railroad ties, vinyl prohibited.
Historic Districts
City has historic district - Certificate of Appropriateness required for fence installation. See Historic District Design Guidelines.
Setbacks
Fences cannot be in public right-of-way. Cannot obstruct any drainage infrastructure.
Design Requirements

Front yard gates: max 6 ft, set back min 15 ft from ROW (per DeKalb pattern)
Retaining Walls
Max 6 ft; may be tiered up to 12 ft with engineering approval
