Fence Regulations

Mableton

Permit Requirements
Required for a fence 7 ft or taller, per the city's fence page. Below 7 ft in a residential backyard: no permit. This is a building-code threshold; the zoning code itself sets no fence permit rule. Apply through the Cloudpermit portal with a material description, height, site plan and a photo example. Building Division: 404-854-4904
Height - Front Yard
Most of the city, 6 ft max. Old downtown Mableton, in the form-based redevelopment district: 4 ft, and some lots must stay unfenced in front.
Height - Side/Rear
Beside the house, 6 ft max. In the back yard, 8 ft max, or 6 ft if the back of your lot runs along a street.
Height Notes
Height includes posts and ornaments on top, must be met on both sides of the fence, and is measured from the existing ground. No more than 6 in of fill may be piled against the fence, and that fill counts toward the height. The height limits do not apply to retaining walls. Fences must be kept structurally sound.
Corner Lots
Nothing between 3 ft and 15 ft tall within 20 ft of where two street rights-of-way meet (or where a street meets a railroad). Utility poles, streetlights, street signs and tree trunks are exempt.
Materials Allowed
No restriction. The zoning code lists no approved materials for residential fences.
Materials Prohibited
None. The zoning code bans no fence material.
Historic Districts
The city adopted a historic preservation ordinance in May 2026, City Code Chapter 15. Once a property or district is designated, a certificate of appropriateness from the historic preservation commission is required before a fence is built, altered or removed. Ask Community Development whether your parcel is designated: 404-590-2511
Setbacks
Never in a public road right-of-way. No property-line setback: the city's fence page says a fence may sit on the property line. A fence placed in a utility or drainage easement may be removed by the city at your expense.
Design Requirements
The zoning code has no finished-side rule. The city's fence page says the finished side must face out toward neighbors and the public, and that damage must be repaired within 90 days. The ordinance governs; those web statements are not in the code.
Gates
Not addressed in the zoning code.
Floodplain Rules
Standard floodplain rules apply. A 25 ft undisturbed stream buffer was previously published but could not be found in the zoning code. Ask Community Development whether a stream buffer applies to your parcel: 404-590-2511
Notes
Governed by Mableton Zoning Code Sec. 7.11(2). Mableton took over zoning from Cobb County on March 3, 2025, so the city's own code applies, not the county's. Community Development, 1400 Veterans Memorial Highway SE, Suite 134-200: 404-590-2511

Rules can vary within a jurisdiction. Historic districts and zoning overlays often have stricter requirements. Look up your exact address to confirm which rules apply to your property.
