Pool fences in Woodstock: 5 ft minimum, with a self-closing, positive latch device on all pedestrian access gates so the pool is enclosed at all times. Sec. 7.304 as amended by Ord. 2026-014; The Code of Ordinances also requires a self-closing and self-locking gate. Sec. 8-57.

Fence setbacks in Woodstock: No citywide rule; Form-Based Code districts: a street-side fence may sit on the lot line or up to 18 in behind it for landscaping, and a fence on a lot line must sit entirely on your own lot.

Height Notes
Woodstock has no general residential fence-height rule. Height rules exist only in the Downtown District and the Form-Based Code districts (parcels zoned FBC-NC, T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5). In the Downtown District the 40 in limit covers fences between the front of the house and the street, and the 6 ft limit covers everywhere else on the lot, including along an alley right-of-way. In the Form-Based Code districts no single street-side fence panel may be over 42 in. Outside those districts the code sets no fence height limit. The corner sight triangle and the pool rule still apply, and new development may also have to meet zoning buffer and overlay fence standards. HOA covenants may add their own limits.

Corner Lots

Materials Allowed
No citywide list. Form-Based Code street-side fences: T3 allows picket, post and hedge, ranch or hedgerow; T4 allows picket, post and hedge, iron, stone, brick or hedgerow; T4O and T5 allow iron, iron with stone, iron with brick, brick, stucco or stone. Wood street-side fences must be painted or stained. Hedges used as street-side fencing must be evergreen.

Historic Districts
Downtown Historic Overlay (DT-HO). No separate fence rule: fences follow the Downtown District limits. No certificate of appropriateness is required. Sec. 7.731.
Setbacks
No citywide rule. Form-Based Code districts: a street-side fence may sit on the lot line or up to 18 in behind it for landscaping, and a fence on a lot line must sit entirely on your own lot.
Design Requirements
Form-Based Code districts: posts and rails on the inside, smooth or flat face out. If both faces are finished they must match; board-on-board counts as equal treatment. Where a required zoning buffer needs a fence: picket or stockade in pressure-treated lumber, redwood or cedar, at least 6 ft, blocking the view completely. The Development Process Committee may allow a fence inside a required zoning buffer. Sec. 10.140 as amended by Ord. 2026-004.
Gates
Not addressed for home fences.
Color Restrictions
Form-Based Code T3, T4, T4O and T5 street-side fences: pressure treated wood, iron and steel must be painted. Hardwood may be varnished, oiled, stained or painted. Sec. 18.412.
