Permit Requirements
Fences do NOT require a building permit (per county FAQ). Exceptions: properties in Conservation/Historic/Landmark/SPI overlay districts; fences over 8 ft (variance needed); masonry walls over 4 ft.

Materials Allowed
Front yard: ornamental only — brick, masonry, picket, split rail. Side/rear: wood, vinyl, chain link permitted. No wooden fences except on individual single-family lots as accessory.
Materials Prohibited
Front yard: chain link and woven wire prohibited. Barbed/razor wire prohibited on residential lots under 3 acres (exception: confining horses). Commercial/multi-family: chain link, unfinished concrete, cinderblock, plastic, fiberglass prohibited.
Historic Districts
Conservation/Historic/Landmark/SPI overlay districts may have additional restrictions — permit required in these areas
Setbacks
Front yard residential: at least 3 ft from the right-of-way line. Side/rear: may be placed adjacent to property line (no minimum setback). Not permitted in street right-of-way (~11 ft from curb).
Design Requirements
Front yard fences must be ornamental style. All fences must present finished side to exterior.
