Height Notes
Commercial and industrial districts: 10 ft max in the back yard, and in a side yard that does not border a street. The 6 ft 8 in side yard limit is written only for the required setback area along a street. The code states no separate figure for a residential side yard away from one. Confirm anything taller with the city. Inside the downtown historic overlay, the overlay's own fence heights replace the citywide ones, whether higher or lower. Also in the overlay: wood fences facing the street must be painted or stained; stone walls and metal fences need sealed drawings from a structural engineer or architect; a fence on a lot line, including its posts and supports, must sit entirely on your own lot. Areas zoned agricultural are exempt from the height limits.

Materials Allowed
Chain link (vinyl-coated or not, in green or black), brick, stuccoed concrete block, wood made for fence construction, wood-look materials, stone, wrought iron, and plastic styled to look like iron fencing. Barbed wire or hog wire: agricultural zones only.
Materials Prohibited
No chain link in the front yard, citywide. In the Hiram Overlay District: no chain link, barbed wire, or hog or horse wire at all.
Historic Districts
Downtown historic overlay district: the city Design Review Board issues a Certificate of Appropriateness, and it must be issued before Paulding County reviews or approves an improvement permit in the district (UDO Sec. 220-30.7). If there is no functioning board, the City Manager or a designee may issue it. Boundary: an exhibit on the city's official zoning map. Inside the district the height limits and the allowed materials both change.
Setbacks
Front yard: at least 2 ft back from the edge of the right-of-way. Sides and back: on or behind the property line.
Design Requirements
Finished side faces out, toward the outside of the property. Every fence or wall must be kept in reasonable repair.
Gates
If a fence cuts off access from the front yard to the back yard, a gate at least 3 ft wide is required, placed anywhere along the front between the side lot line and the house.
