Height Notes
Under the 2025 zoning ordinance, height is measured from the ground next to the fence to the highest point, not counting posts; posts may rise up to 1 ft above the fence. The older city code measures from the finished ground within 18 in of either side. 8 ft is allowed in four cases: The ground within 20 ft of the house on either adjoining lot sits at least 4 ft above the shared lot line. A side or rear lot line abuts a commercial or heavy industrial use, or a more intensive use, that needs no buffer yard. The fence is a Georgia DOT sound barrier, or a security fence required by the state or federal government for a public or institutional use. The City Council allows extra height with a rezoning or specific use authorization. A security fence attached to the main building and set entirely inside the required building setback lines may match the height of that building. No fence may be more than 2 ft thick without zoning administrator approval. Game court fences: 12 ft max in or next to a residential district, 16 ft elsewhere. Farm operations and athletic-facility fences (ball fields, tennis courts, driving ranges) are exempt from the zoning fence standards.

Historic Districts
A certificate of appropriateness from the Bowdon Historic Preservation Commission is required before putting up, changing or removing a fence on a designated historic property or inside a designated historic district (Code Ch. 18). The commission holds a public hearing on each application.
