Fence Regulations

Bainbridge

Permit Requirements
Fence permit required prior to installation (Sec. 8.1.2(1)). Building permit also required for fence replacement/repair exceeding 50% of linear frontage.
Height - Front Yard
Solid fence (wood, PVC, masonry): 4 ft. Open fence (picket, wrought iron): 6 ft. Chain-link: 4 ft, cannot extend beyond front facade.
Height - Side/Rear
Solid fence: 6 ft. Open fence: 6 ft. Chain-link: 6 ft (cannot extend beyond front facade on side).
Height Notes
Open style fencing must be minimum 50% opacity. Chain-link prohibited in all commercial districts (CBD, NB, O-P, HC). Industrial chain-link: up to 10 ft. Non-residential abutting residential: up to 8 ft wall with Zoning Administrator approval.
Corner Lots
No obstruction between 30 in. and 12 ft within sight visibility triangle (25 ft from intersection of ROW lines, Sec. 5.2.5).
Materials Allowed
Wood, PVC, masonry, picket, wrought iron style, chain-link (with district restrictions). Walls must have finished surface (stucco or brick).
Materials Prohibited
Broken glass, steel spikes, sharp objects. Barbed wire only in industrial districts (angled inward). Commercial chain-link may not have slats.
Setbacks
Min 2 ft from property line. Not in ROW or conservation easements. May be in drainage easements with engineering approval. Commercial masonry walls: min 7 ft from side property line.
Design Requirements
Finished side must face adjacent lot/street. Wall columns: max 30 ft spacing. All fences maintained in good repair. Buffer walls required when nonresidential abuts residential: min 6 ft, up to 8 ft.
Gates
Vehicular access gates: min 25 ft from public street ROW. Entrance gates max 10 ft unless additional height approved.
Retaining Walls
Retaining walls deemed necessary by city engineer exempt from height/location restrictions.
