Permit Requirements
Fence permit required (Section 7-111). Administrative approval for fences <=6 ft ($30); building permit for >6 ft ($60). No fence may be constructed without approval.
Height - Front Yard
48 in. (4 ft) maximum; must be at least 75% open space
Height - Side/Rear
6 ft max residential. Commercial/institutional: up to 8 ft (except front). Industrial: up to 8 ft.
Height Notes
Corner lot side yards may have >48 in. fence if set back 10 ft from ROW. Solid masonry walls up to 8 ft only in commercial/industrial.
Corner Lots
No fence within traffic sight visibility triangle per Sections 612 & 613. Front/street-side: max 48 in., 75% open. Taller fence on corner lot side if set back 10 ft from ROW.
Materials Allowed
Substantial material. Pre-engineered vinyl panels. Commercial chain-link must be vinyl-coated with integral color. Industrial privacy: nonwood maintenance-free material.
Materials Prohibited
Barbed wire, tires, scrap metal, sheet metal, vinyl siding (except pre-engineered panels). Security fence barbed ends prohibited. Commercial chain-link may not have slats.
Setbacks
Min 2 ft from property line. Not in public ROW. Fences in easements must not impede water flow. Industrial privacy fence: 15 ft from ROW.
Design Requirements
Min 5% open for air/light/drainage (residential). Finished face must face abutting property or street. Must be maintained in reasonable repair.
Gates
Interior lots: gate of same material required for maintenance access. Pool gates: self-closing, self-latching. Industrial driveway gates: set back to avoid congestion.
Floodplain Rules
Fences in easements shall not impede flow of water.
Color Restrictions
Commercial chain-link must have integral color vinyl coating.
