Permit Requirements
Building permit required for structures. Fences exempt from building setback requirements but must comply with UDC Section 5.02.03. Contact Community Development at 229-386-7850.
Height - Front Yard
4 ft max in front yard. Within clear visibility triangle at intersections: 3 ft max.
Height - Side/Rear
8 ft max in side or rear yard.
Height Notes
Heights measured from natural ground level. Industrial zones (WLI, HI): 10 ft max. Stormwater detention fences: 6 ft min, 4 ft in front yard.
Pool Fences
Corner Lots
Clear visibility triangle: no fence, wall, hedge, or other obstruction between 3 ft and 12 ft in height within area formed by intersecting ROW lines and points 20 ft from the intersection.
Materials Allowed
AG district: barbed wire and electric fences permitted. Chain link permitted for detention facilities and solar farm security.
Materials Prohibited
Barbed wire prohibited on stormwater detention facility fences. Barbed wire and electric fences implicitly prohibited in non-AG residential zones.
Setbacks
Fences may be located on or inside property lines. Building setback requirements do not restrict fences. Finished side must face outward.
Design Requirements
Finished side of fence must face outward. Dumpster screening: solid masonry wall or hardy plank/wood fence, 6-8 ft, with double-staggered shrubs and gate.
Gates
Stormwater detention facilities: at least one access gate for maintenance vehicles.
Retaining Walls
Not restricted by building setback requirements when necessary for proper site development.
