Unincorporated Spalding County

Permit Requirements
No permit required for standard fences. Permit required for fences over 8 ft (variance needed), masonry/concrete walls over 4 ft, or properties in conservation/historic/landmark districts.
Height - Front Yard
4 ft max. Must be ornamental: brick, masonry, picket, or split rail. Chain link and woven wire prohibited in front yard.
Height - Side/Rear
6 ft max in residential side yards; 8 ft max in rear yards
Height Notes
Tennis courts/basketball: 10 ft max if properly lighted. Corner lots have two front yards. Fences allowed on side/rear property lines.
Corner Lots
Two front yards — both street-facing sides subject to 4 ft max and ornamental material requirements
Materials Allowed
Front yard: brick, masonry, picket, split rail (ornamental). Side/rear: standard residential materials.
Materials Prohibited
Front yard: chain link and woven wire prohibited. Residential lots under 3 acres: barbed wire prohibited. Barbed wire allowed on AR-1, AR-2 (livestock) and C-1B, C-1C, C-2, C-3 zones.
Historic Districts
Properties in conservation, historic, or landmark districts require permits
Setbacks
May be placed on side/rear property lines (spacing for maintenance recommended). Cannot encroach into public ROW (~11 ft from curb).
Design Requirements
Front yard: ornamental design required. Single/two-family lots abutting in rear without screening must install trees/vegetation or opaque fence.
Retaining Walls
Masonry/concrete walls over 4 ft require permit
Floodplain Rules
Fences within drainage easements require written approval from easement holder and Stormwater Plan Review Section
