Height Notes
Measured from the ground at the base of the fence to its topmost part. Barbed wire, where allowed, may rise up to 2 ft above the fence height. It is never allowed in the low, medium and suburban density residential zones (R-1, R-21, R-10). The limits are the same in every zoning district. On a lot with a street at the front and another at the back, the front yard is the one facing the street the neighboring houses face, unless a recorded plat or deed says otherwise.

Corner Lots

No fence, wall, hedge or planting may block it. An existing fence that blocks the view at a curve or corner must be fixed within 90 days.
Materials Allowed
Solid: wood, polyurethane, masonry, stone. Decorative: wood, stone, masonry, wrought iron. Both permitted in every zone. Chain link: every zone, but only in side and back yards in the low, medium and suburban density residential zones (R-1, R-21, R-10). Welded or hog wire: the estate and residential agricultural zones (E-A, R-A) only. Electric fence: only on a residential lot outside a platted subdivision, side and back yards only, with warning signs showing the fence type and voltage at every corner and every 15 ft, each sign 4 sq ft or less. Never in R-1, R-21 or R-10.
Materials Prohibited
In the low, medium and suburban density residential zones (R-1, R-21, R-10): barbed wire, welded or hog wire, electric fencing, and chain link in the front yard. Welded or hog wire anywhere outside the estate and residential agricultural zones (E-A, R-A). Barbed wire anywhere except along the top of a fence or wall.
Historic Districts
None. The county code has no historic district, historic overlay or certificate of appropriateness rule.
Setbacks
None. A fence may be built on or inside the property line, and the building setbacks do not restrict it. Keep it out of the sight triangle at a street corner or driveway.
Design Requirements
None for a home fence. The county's finished-side and solid-fence rules apply only to car lots, building-supply yards, outside storage areas and dumpsters.
Gates
None for a home fence. Pool gates follow the state pool code: open outward, self-closing and self-latching.
Floodplain Rules
The flood chapter does not name fences. In a mapped floodway nothing may be built without an engineer's certification that it will not raise flood levels, and the code counts a fence as a structure. Ask the county before fencing in a floodway. ULDC Sec. 3.01.08
