Fence Regulations

Permit Requirements
No general fence permit required. Electrical equipment on fences requires building permit. Swimming pool permit required for pool fences.
Height - Front Yard
4 feet maximum for solid/opaque fences; spaced picket designs may exceed 4 feet with minimum 2-inch gaps between pickets
Height - Side/Rear
8 feet maximum above grade in residential districts
Height Notes
Section 6.9 of Zoning Ordinance (adopted 12/8/2020). Non-residential also 8 feet max. Columns/ornamental features may exceed max by up to 3 feet.
Corner Lots
Not specified beyond standard intersection visibility requirements
Materials Allowed
Wood, masonry, stacked stone, stucco, ornamental metal, or approved alternatives. Chain-link/woven-wire permitted in side and rear yards only and MUST be vinyl-coated.
Materials Prohibited
Vinyl fencing prohibited (except replacement-in-kind of existing). Barbed wire, razor wire, and concertina wire prohibited.
Setbacks
Footings must remain entirely within property boundaries. Cannot encroach onto property lines.
Design Requirements
Finished side must face toward streets and adjoining properties. Only black, white, or earth tones permitted. Primary and neon colors prohibited. Must maintain good condition and structural integrity.
Gates
Must follow all fence/wall design standards. May exceed fence height by up to 3 feet. Public streets cannot be gated. Emergency vehicle access: minimum 14 ft width (one-way) or 20 ft (two-way), 14 ft clearance height. Must be located minimum 30 ft from adjacent road edge.
Floodplain Rules
Fences must not impede water flow
Color Restrictions
Only black, white, or earth tones. Primary and neon colors prohibited.
