8 ft max in side and back yards on a home lot. Privacy fencing is allowed there but may not run past the front corner of the house. The 8 ft cap covers every yard on the lot; only industrial and general commercial property is outside it.

Historic Districts
No local historic district appears in the city's published code. The historic preservation ordinance names fences among the changes that need a certificate of appropriateness, but only after a district or property is designated by a separate ordinance, and no such ordinance appears in the code. The Springfield Historic District is a National Register listing, which carries no local fence review. Ask the Building and Zoning Department before fencing near downtown.
