Height is measured from the adjacent ground, street curb or alley surface, whichever is highest. Along a shared side lot line, measure from the average ground level of the lower lot. City Council may approve taller fences where screening is needed.

Nothing over 2.5 ft (30 in) within 20 ft of where the two street rights-of-way meet, in all zoning districts. Exceptions: a post or pole up to 8 in across that holds an authorized sign, street light or utility, and signs or lights whose lowest point is at least 12 ft above the pavement.

Front yard: wood, brick, rock, stone, wrought iron, or an equivalent the City Manager approves. Side and back: the same, plus chain link if it cannot be seen from a public right-of-way.

In the North Conyers Design Overlay, yards fronting State Highway 138 must have a 42 in fence: three vinyl rails with brick, rock or stone columns matching the neighboring building, set just behind the required landscape strip, with columns at every corner and end. Mixed-use Village Overlay, yards fronting an arterial or collector street: a 3.5 ft fence of natural wood or vinyl rails painted white must be set just behind the 10 ft landscape strip, with brick or stone piers at every corner and end. Openings only as wide as needed for a car or a person, and the fence returns inward at least 10 ft at each opening. No other fence is allowed in those yards. Mixed-Use Development (MxD) district: fences must be a natural wood finish that is oiled, painted, stained or varnished, or wrought iron matching the main building, or an equivalent material that convincingly simulates natural wood. Front yard 4 ft max. Side and back 4 ft minimum and 8 ft maximum, unless the City Manager approves otherwise. Gateway Village (GV) district, yards fronting Flat Shoals Road, Iris Drive, Miller's Chapel Road, Old McDonough Highway, Old Salem Road, State Route 20 or State Route 138: a 42 in fence is required behind the 10 ft landscape strip, three white vinyl or wood rails with brick or natural stone columns matching the neighboring building, and columns at every corner and end. These overlay and district standards are in Sec. 8-7-66, Sec. 8-7-67, Sec. 8-7-39 and Sec. 8-7-44. The city also has a historic preservation chapter requiring a Certificate of Appropriateness.
